Feathered Long Double coats are the most complex home grooming challenge — you’re managing two completely different coat textures on the same dog. Every tool, shampoo, and conditioner in this kit was chosen specifically for Feathered Long Double coat — not generic, but 11 items selected to handle both the dense base coat and the delicate feathering. Your Protocol walks you through the exact sequence that keeps both layers healthy, tangle-free, and show-ready — no more wondering if you’re doing it right.

The FurHQ Grooming Method
Feathered Long Double coats follow the full FurHQ 5-Step Grooming Method (Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish). It opens with the Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check. Prep then starts with a quick line-brush (parting the coat and brushing it section by section) on the body and gentle attention to the feathering, followed by the Coat Release Method (our technique for lifting loose undercoat from the skin) in the wash, with conditioning as the final rinse. During Dry, the coat is dried all the way to bone-dry, with the brush coming in for the final stage of the dry — damp feathering is at its most fragile, and rushing the brush causes breakage that takes months to grow out. Never stop at damp — a damp coat is uncomfortable for the dog and invites hot spots and brush burn. Carding the body coat (raking out dead, loose undercoat) with the Long Coat Carding Rake is done on a dry coat in Prep, no more than once every two weeks; the Deshedding Comb can be used over the whole coat as often as your dog needs it, even in the same session, always on a dry coat. Never card or deshed a wet coat.

Your Free Online Course
Your kit includes access to your Feathered Long Double Coat Protocol on FurHQ — video lessons featuring demo dog Mondo Fluffarino walking you through every step. You’ll learn how to manage both the double-coat base and the feathering at once, how to use the Long Coat Carding Rake on the body coat (no more than once every two weeks) and the Deshedding Comb over the whole coat (as needed) on a dry coat, the Coat Release Method, and how to protect and maintain the feathering that makes these breeds so striking. Your Protocol also includes supporting resources — guides, cheat sheets, checklists, and more — to keep you on track between grooms.
Ideal For
Feathered Long Double coats combine a dense double-coat base with long, flowing feathering on the legs, ears, chest, and tail — recognised by that feathering regardless of jacket length, with feathering typically exceeding 3 inches (7.5 cm), and requiring careful attention to both layers. Some examples of breeds this kit is perfect for include the Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Border Collie, English Springer Spaniel, and Shetland Sheepdog — breeds whose elegant feathering demands consistent, methodical care.
Breed is a starting point, not a rule. Coat type comes down to the individual dog — the same breed can carry a different coat, so always groom the coat in front of you. If your dog’s coat doesn’t match what’s described here, use the FurHQ Coat Identifier at furhq.com to find the right fit.
