How it Works

Slip Chains are unique in that they are designed to tighten under tension and release as soon as the tension is gone. Not only are they practical and simple to use, they are also one of the most important tools in a trainer’s arsenal.

A Slip Chain is meant to be worn high on the dogs neck, just below their ears. Proper placement ensures that when the collar does tighten, it doesn’t reach past your dog’s jawline. This helps guide your dog’s head into a natural position, making them less likely to pull forward or sideways.

If you haven’t learned to use a Slip Collar properly, it won’t be as effective of a training tool for you and your dog.

Step A

Get your chain ready by creating a loop large enough to pass easily over your dogs head.

Pro Tip: Make sure your dog knows you are about to introduce the collar so they aren’t scared by the action.

Step B

For Right-Handed Owners: Form the letter “P” with the collar. Your dog should be standing on your left side, as this will help you form the perfect loop. Hold the collar in the middle at the top and use your left hand to slip the lead over your dog’s head; the right hand secures it under the dog’s neck (for best results, have the collar right behind the ears).

Step C

For Left-Handed Owners: Form the number “6” with the collar. Your dog should be standing on your right side. Hold the top of the collar in a loop that will be passed over your dog’s head with your dominant hand. Use your right hand to slip the lead over your dog’s head (for best results, have the collar right behind the ears).

To find your size, measure around the base of your dog’s skull just behind the ears. This measurement is the same as the collar when it’s fully tightened or closed.
