In the heart of every artist lies a story, a journey that shapes their craft, and for Kathy Hysen, the canvas is as unique as it gets – cats. 

As we delve into the world of grooming, we uncover the inspiring narrative of a passionate professional who found her calling amidst fur, purrs, and whiskers.

What inspired Kathy to become a professional pet groomer? 

Every artist's journey begins with a spark, a moment of serendipity that sets their course. 

For Kathy, it was the fortuitous encounter with exceptional groomers, Sue Fagan and her family, that ignited her passion for grooming. 

Their expertise not only trained her but also instilled in her the desire to embark on this enchanting journey. 

Little did she know that her path would lead her to become a Certified Feline Master Groomer, a testament to her dedication and love for her craft.

Fueling the Passion: A Love for Cats

What fuels Kathy's passion?

The answer is simple – cats and their owners.

With a heart brimming with affection for these feline companions, Kathy finds joy in the transformation of her furry clients.

From makeovers for new clients to maintenance grooms for regulars, Kathy's touch leaves behind a trail of contented purrs and delighted owners.

Even the most spirited kitties find solace in her gentle care, emerging from their sessions as paragons of cleanliness and cuteness.

"It is always very cool when a basic nail trim can amaze the owners, let alone when I shave and bathe an aggressive cat or one with those gigantic 'mushroom' mats."

The Beauty in Challenges: A Groomer's Odyssey

Like any artisan, Kathy faces her share of challenges. Yet, it's her unwavering determination and thirst for knowledge that guide her through.

One such challenge is self-confidence, a hurdle she overcomes through continuous learning and interaction with fellow professionals.

With each grooming conference and trade show, she gains not only technical expertise but also the reassurance to embrace her unique journey, irrespective of age or expectations.

"Self confidence! Attending grooming conferences and trade shows is so educational on so many levels. Technique, equipment, products and personal interaction with other professionals is invaluable. Starting a grooming career in my mid-fifties was challenging, and it took too long before I learned that my expectations for myself were going to differ from those in their 30's and 40's. So I do my best and keep learning."

Lessons Carved in Fur and Whiskers

In the tapestry of Kathy's career lies a valuable lesson – preparedness.

Before each client arrives, she meticulously ensures that every tool, product, and equipment is primed for use.

This attention to detail not only streamlines the grooming process but also allows her the flexibility to address any unforeseen challenges with ease and grace.

"Be prepared: before the client arrives, I ensure the correct tools, products and equipment are ready for use. Once the owner is present, my attention is focussed on their expectations and evaluating the cat's condition and attitude. Once the cat is in my care, my mental list of tasks can take over, since everything else is ready. This ensures a smooth grooming process, yet allows time and energy for any unexpected issues that may arise."

Kathy's Advice: Sharing With Colleagues

Kathy emphasizes the importance of careful consideration and thorough preparation for those interested in a grooming career, covering everything from the appeal of the job to the practical and interpersonal challenges it entails.

"Examine your reasons why a grooming career is appealing. Talk with groomers to find out details about the grooming processes, maintenance of tools and grooming area. Assess your time commitment limits, discover the realities of financial investment in education and equipment, decide what kind of career you want (full or part time? self-employed or employee? dogs or cats or both?). Since people are part of the client equation, assess your comfort level with various personalities. Not everyone is nice and civil!"

Nurturing Future Talents: A Groomer's Legacy

As Kathy reflects on her journey, she envisions a future where she can pass on her knowledge to aspiring groomers.

Through coaching sessions and educational endeavours, she aims to nurture a new generation of feline groomers, igniting in them the same passion and dedication that has defined her career.

"A few interesting requests developed into coaching sessions. This was really enjoyable. Perhaps it will expand into "passing the torch" to people interested in grooming cats. With the NCGI theory components now online, I can spend the time teaching some basic practical aspects."
